Our Philosophy

Wisdom begins with wonder - by Socrates

To cherish the joy of families and the many different ways they come to us.

With Te Whaariki and Kei Tua o te Pae as guidelines, we recognise that each and every child is competent and capable, and we will adapt our pedagogy to support all learning. Theorists of human behaviour, Piaget, Vygotsky and Bronfennrenner, underpin our assessment and evaluation of children's learning.

Happy Father's Day Night

Thank you to the Dads and Granddads that could make it to our Father's Day Evening.
It was an opportunity for us to talk about the things dear to our hearts, your children, in an informal, relaxed environment.

Your handy work has become part of Learning Curves' History and will remain for many years to come.

Thank you to Gerald, an ex-Dad from our centre. Your skills and knowledge are invaluable and we appreciate you sharing them with us to make this a special evening for the Dads and Granddads of today's Learning Curves.

Individual photos will be added to your child's/grandchild's blog.

Something for us all to think about

At a recent professional development course we were given an opportunity to watch the following clip. It is quite long (4 mins) but it is worth watching to get an idea of the world that children are growing up in.

Children are using technology. They will face challenges and they will need skills to manage these challenges. Who will teach them these skills, their parents, their teachers? Do we know the technologies that they will be using?

This Is What Friends Do

In our mixed age setting from 2 to 5 year olds there is many opportunities for the children to take on the role as teachers and we all learn from those experiences. Below is an example of children learning from each other during a normal day at Learning Curves. Don't forget to click on the picture to enlarge and the back arrow to return. A video will also follow:

Tantalising Lemon Muffins

Recipe page personalized with Smilebox

Mandy has some renovations going on at her house at the moment and mentioned to some children how she likes to make muffins for the builders to enjoy each Friday. Grace wanted to taste one of Mandy's home baked muffins and so Mandy said she would try to remember to bring some in. Unfortunately, there was only enough for the builders and so we decided to make some of our own muffins 'Learning Curves style'.

Mandy thought that this was an awesome opportunity for the children to learn using all of their senses and by participating within the process - it is good to learn by 'doing'. Learning stories will be added to the portfolios of the children involved but in the mean time, please take a moment to view the photos.

As always, we appreciate any comments in the box below.

Sonny's Special Day

Sonny was making so much noise and so Maree had a quick look to see if he was ok. She thought he'd like a nice basin of water to splash around in and off she went to see what she could find.

Moments later she was back and added a nice ensuite to Sonny's cage. Good job he had a bath because soon afterwards Sonny had a visitor. He can be a very naughty bird sometimes, especially when he splashes everyone. Have a look at his video to see how much he enjoyed it:

A Funny Story

Today, while quietly minding my own business, watching the day pass by, a certain Mr N asked a very deep and profound question... "Mandy, do you work?" Followed by "My mum does." How is one to reply to such a question?

Walking through Lynn Mall with a shopping trolley full of groceries, one of the children spotted me, delighted to see me outside of the centre, and again, another very good, thoughtful question was asked... "Do teachers need groceries too?"

Happy Birthday Number 3 Grace

Yesterday, Maree asked Grace what colour cake she would like Thomas to make her.
"Red with pink candles." replied Grace.
They wrote Thomas a note to remind him and today, on Grace's birthday, Thomas turned up with the perfect cake for Grace and it was YUM. Thank you Thomas.

The Hula Master

Here is an example of 'Practice makes Perfect'. If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. The Hula Master has practiced his technique for quite some time and his mum told me that he even practices at home.
I hope you enjoy this video clip as much as I do!

Museum Trip

In response to the children's interest in volcanoes we arranged a trip to the museum and we were able to go to the 'Weird and Wonderful Discovery Centre' too where the children could have hands-on fun and exploration. Tactile learning at it's best. The photos are attached including the children's voices.

Your feed back or thoughts are welcomed so please feel free to add some comments.
